The Patchouli project

Since this project was introduced in 2002, Agro-industrial Complex RUGOFARM S.A has been able to establish 5 nurseries in the 4 communes of Cibitoke province.These communes are Rugombo,Mabayi, Mugina and that of Murwi. For the moment,it has produced 800 000 patchouli cuttings for 3000 farmers who are organized in 50 community associations. The project has then passed from 1 ha at the beginning to 53 ha in 2018. In 2009,RUGOFARM made the first distillation of patchouli oil and produced 14,43 liters which increased up to 264 litres in December 2017.

In the field of agriculture particularly the cultivation of patchouli, RUGOFARM S.A provides support in the reduction of poverty (ODD 1), improves food security in the community (ODD2), empowers women (ODD 5) and creates opportunities for work and economic well-being (ODD 8).

Currently,the project has already reached at least 3017 patchouli farmers within 40% of women and 35% of young people. In the social stand point, beneficiaries of this project are able to afford the costs of health care and the school fees for their children. Some have built updated houses and others have also bought vehicles. Ultimately, the project PATCHOULI of RUGOFARM S.A contributes a lot in improving the standard of the community life of patchouli farmers (providers and the project beneficiaries).

With the same project, Rugofarm plans to produce 150 tonnes of patchouli oils by 2023 which will place Burundi in the second rank at the world exporters level of the essential oils from Patchouli after Indonesia. To reach at that level,Rugofarm accounts to proceed by extension of its operations in the provinces of Bubanza and Bujumbura.

The PALM OIL project.

After being introduced by RUGOFARM,palm is operated on more than 400 hectares. Palm tree has always been considered as a shade plant for the cultivation of Patchouli like banana trees which trends are changing nowadays. Palm oil is in the process of being transformed gradually into a side complet project with its own products (palm oil,nuts, natural fertilisers ; fire wood, etc)soap and other derivative products within a few years. RUGOFARM also aims to develop oil palm as an entire chain under the same model as other crops such as Patchouli and Rice. It means that It is positioned as a nuclear power firm in the middle of the values chain quoted in the input as to :

  1. Make the expansion of these palm oil plantations in Burundi and in neighbouring countries;

  2. Provide a framework worthy of the name of the new planters in Burundi and in neighbouring countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo;

  3. Import seeds of a good quality and establish nurseries to produce seedlings of the best quality;

  4. Distribute seedlings and provide technical support to growers.

And downstream:
  1. Buy all productions of the fruit of the palm(drupes);

  2. Raise awareness on the expansion and modernisation of its plant palm oil to be able to accommodate new production.

  3. Transform fruits of palm oil quality food, Produce soap and other cosmetic products for local and regional markets.

RICE project : RUGO RICE.

With 300 hectares of irrigated area on which this culture is cultivated, RUGOFARM has a real potential for the development of very profitable rice industry. Our company uses two levers to maximize its production :

Moreover,Rugombo has more than 5000 hectares irrigable and suitable areas for the production of rice founded from RUGOFARM idea to professionalizing the value chain in order to have access to local market and sub-regional ones with quality products.

RUGOFARM plays the role of a true catalyst for the development and innovation by installing a unit of husking and packaging of rice. To ensure the production of quality raw material, RugoFarm has already created partnerships in rice research with IRRI (International RiceResearch Institute), and propose to producers of quality seeds and modern cultivation practices.

In the same framework, It continues its program in the system of warehouse receipt (Warehouse Receipt System)in its warehouse operations.Rugofarm S. A. plans also to work with East Africa Grain Council (EAGC) in order to train the personnel of the company and the operationalisation of the WRS which will form small-scale farmers in its application.

In the future, rehabilitation project storage facility of 3000 stages of drying (3000 square meters) of RUGOFARM will be initiated. This will be made with modern equipments for post-harvest handling including moisture meters, digital scales, pallets and tarps. Harvesters stripping will be used for the harvest of paddy.

At the end, this company will work with 3,000 small-scale farmers. These farmers will be trained on warehouse receipt system and management after harvest (harvesting, drying and storage) and the harmonised standards of EAC on the cereal for rice. Because of this, RUGOFARM will buy paddy from farmers and will transform it into white rice.This a new idea ,not only in Burundi, but also in EAC region. The ultimate goal of aggregation is to ensure that smallholder farmers have access to structured grain markets .
